I painted this scene of an overcast day in the country, when the crop rows in the fields are starting to fill in, and the air is heavy before a summer rain shower. The field rows lead back to an iconic red barn.

This painting was inspired by the old red barns and white farmhouses that were once so common along the country backroads, that I love.  There is something so peaceful and pleasant about being out in the country on a quiet summers day!  I hope to capture that in my paintings of summer time in the beautiful American Heartland.

A couple of new small farm landscape paintings by Sharon France

 I have been working on some small paintings this past couple of months.  Here are two of the ones that I have completed now.   Deciding on what sort of weather and time of day is one of the fun things that I like about landscape painting!  I have painted everything from sunny blue skies, cloud filled skies, overcast skies, sunsets skies, stormy skies, tornado scenes, night paintings and others in between.  These two painting measure just 5 x 7", painted on archival quality hardboard panels. 

Miniature Barn Painting - Bit of the Country

Bit of the Country

This is another of my miniature 4 x 6" paintings done on hardboard.  I vary my normal painting technique from painting on canvas to working on the hardboard surface.  Stretched canvas has just a little give to the surface compared to hardboard and so I find that using my brushes in a different way works better on this surface.  I also need to go down in brush size as my painting surface sizes get smaller.   I wanted the feel of distance in the painting so worked in a series of several colors and ground spaces for this piece.  This painting will easily fit right into a standard frame.

White Farmhouse Fence Line Painting

 

 Fence Past the Old Farmhouse 

 

 This is another of my miniature 4 x 6" paintings.  I often get ideas for new paintings when driving along through the country.  A fence line on a slight hill gave me the idea for this painting.  I decided on a simple old farmhouse with green shutters, as the main subject for this piece.  This painting is done on hardboard in acrylic paint.

Old Farmhouse Original Miniature Painting

Chimney on the Old Farmhouse

The idea for this painting came to me a few weeks ago when we were driving past a little old house out in the country.  I quickly sketched down the basic idea and decided to use it for one of my miniature pieces.  This little painting is done on archival quality hardboard and measures 4"x 6".  It will fit easily into a standard sized picture frame.

Rooster and Girl on a Country Walk

A New Pet

Well as you can guess, this painting is definitely from my imagination! I had this idea in my head for a few weeks, before I finally sat down to put it on canvas.  I decided on a rooster in this rural scene to go along with the girl who has appeared in some of my past paintings.   They are headed towards a small shed that came from my memories of an old well pump house, that was on the old farmstead that we rented years ago.  The rooster was one of a line of bantam mix chickens that we have had over the years.  He had beautiful colors in his feathers that glistened in the sun.This is another of my paintings that is headed to 'The Peaceable Kingdom: Animals, Real and Imagined' art show, at the Bedford Gallery in Walnut Creek, CA.

Does this House Painting Look Finished Yet?

I have been working on details on the old white farmhouse painting that I posted as a blocked in rough image, in my last post. Now I am showing the house after painting in the windows and while working on the flagstone foundations stones.

The next image shows the house with the window panes now painted in and wisps of smoke coming from the chimneys. I will do a couple of "tweaks" yet to the house, and then continue on with the rest of this farm landscape.

Red Barn in a Red Poppy Field Painting

In case you are wondering where I come up with Midwestern landscape paintings with red poppies in them, well they are definitely from my imagination, as poppies are not a field crop in the Heartland.  We have grown quite a few varieties of flowers on our old farmstead over the years.  In a small naturalized meadow area I had planted seeds for the red Flanders Poppies, and they did naturalize there for us for a number of years.  These are the poppies that are thought of on Veteran's day and were known for growing on the damaged battlefields in Europe, especially from WWI in Flanders Field, Belgium.  I love the bright color of these poppies and decided to work them into my landscapes, when I think they will work well in a painting.   This piece is my newest painting that I just finished up this week.

Down a Back Country Road

I decided on a "fire engine" red, International Harvester Pickup Truck for this rural country road painting.  This is one of the new pieces from the series,  that I have been working on this fall.  I photographed this truck while it was on display with the antique tractors and farm machinery, at our County Fair this year.  I  wanted it for use in this scene from my imagination, of a back road in the Heartland.    This painting is available though:

Art Museum Exhibit

Several of my paintings are in the fall/winter 2012-13 Regional Juried Exhibition IX, at the Freeport Art Museum, Freeport, IL.  I received an Honorable Mention for this piece,  "Over the Old Fence Line".

Little White Farmhouse

I love seeing the gently rolling fields on the Heartland.  My inspiration for this new small 7 x 5" landscape.  A distant small farmstead is found on a ridge behind the Gothic style farmhouse.

I decided on one of those beautiful "Blue Sky Days" found here in the Midwest at this time of year, for this new painting.  I just finished this piece today, so one might say that it is still "hot of the easel", so to speak!   I love painting simple scenes of the American Heartland, and hope that you will enjoy viewing my original work.

Midwestern Farm House Painting

Along a Winding Back Road

This new piece is one of my dreamscapes of the midwestern heartland.  An old traditional farmhouse in the quiet flatland area on a quiet back road.  This piece measures 16 x 12" on stretched canvas.  I hope that you will enjoy viewing this and my other farmhouse scenes.  I have the ideas for my next two scenes in my head and will be working on them this next week.
