Devon Cattle Painting from France Gallery

Best Buddies

My newest painting, done in soft pastel, on thick museum grade pastel paper, shows two steers of the Milking Devon Breed of Heritage Cattle.  This was a very early breed of cattle to arrive here, as early as 1623.  This breed was known for their "speed, intelligence, strength, willingness to work" as draft animals for the early colonists, in the U.S.  The two steers that I used as the models for this painting, live an good life at a Farm Museum here in the Midwest.

Rare Heritage Livestock Turkey Original Painting "Miss Pecky"

Meet "Miss Pecky". This is one of several of my paintings that have been juried into 'The Peaceable Kingdom: Animals, Real and Imagined' art show at the Bedford Gallery in Walnut Creek, CA. This show is in the San Francisco bay area, if you are in CA. The show will run from March 3 - May 19, 2013. Miss Pecky is one of our pet heritage turkeys that we raised from fertile eggs. We hatched them in an incubator and have kept them as pets since. She is a hen turkey of a type known as the "Mottled Black". Pecky was named because of her habit of pecking at anything shiny or interesting, and has never grown out of this. She is over 5 years old, which is getting up there in turkey years!

Icelandic Sheep Painting at Chicago Art Gallery Show

This painting is the first in my new series that I started working on late in 2012. I decided on an ewe, of a heritage breed of Icelandic Sheep, as the main subject for this painting "Near Home". We raise a few heritage turkeys and chickens after starting with a "Bourbon Red Turkey" tom, that we brought home from a Rare Breeds Livestock show. I will be posting more paintings from my new series of farm landscapes of heritage life stock, as the year goes on.

This piece is currently in a juried show at the Bridgeport Art Gallery in Chicago, IL through Jan. 2013.
