Beyond the Old Fence Line I chose a long 24 x 12" canvas for this new early mornng farm landscape.  I wanted a bit of a folk feel to this painting with rows of the old hedge apple fence posts, that were once prominant in the midwestern landscape.  In the right weather conditions these posts sprouted and grew into Osage Orange tree lines and one can still find isolated remnants of these old

Old farmhouses are often part of my farm paintings. There is always a mystery about seeing an old abandoned farmhouse here in the heartland. Why was it abandoned, who had once lived there, what had the farmstead one looked like in its prime? I much prefer to travel the midwest along the quiet back roads rather than the interstate highways. You never know what you may find along a remote stretch of road paved or graveled. Many of the old fence lines disappeared from the heartland as farms and fields grew larger over time. I often paint my barn and farm landscapes in a simple minimalist style. I paint by barns from memory and my imagination, so that I do not get hung up on details that are unnecessary for my paintings. I have been working on a new series of paintings in smaller sizes on masonite panels and stretched canvas. Working smaller and on a smoother surface like masonite allows me to paint in a more impressionistic style than I normally use on stretched canvas.
